In command of the 46-gun Repulse during Revolutionary War, took Benjamin Franklin to France to be the American Ambassador, capturing three merchant ships enroute. Sailed completely around Ireland in the first raid into English waters (January 1777), capturing and destroying fourteen ships in five days. On the return voyage was sunk in a violent Atlantic storm with only one survivor.
