Rear Admiral John A.B. Dahlgren
1826-1870


 

Inventor of naval ordnance, including the naval gun named for him and used extensively in the Civil War.  He was the Chief Bureau of Naval Ordnance twice. In 1863 and  until the end of the Civil War, commanded the South Atlantic Blockade Squadron, closing the port of Charleston.
